The Venice Court has begun advancing hearings in judicial Italian citizenship cases, following the trend set by other Italian courts. The measure took effect on October 22, 2025.
Based on Article 127 of the Civil Procedure Code, judges can review and decide cases solely on the submitted documentation. If no additional evidence or statements from the parties are required, the hearing is considered held, and the case proceeds directly to judgment.
This initiative has already been implemented in other courts such as Brescia, Ancona, Salerno, and Naples, with the main goal of reducing waiting times. Most claimants are descendants of Italians who turned to the judicial route to avoid long queues at consulates.
In addition to advancing hearings, the Venice Court reorganized its internal structure to handle the growing demand. Twenty-two judges were redistributed across four divisions — civil, business, labor, and second civil — prioritizing Italian citizenship cases according to volume and complexity.
The redistribution took into account the judges’ experience and the repetitive nature of the cases, making proceedings more efficient. The measure is part of Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aimed at modernizing the justice system.
