Since April 2024, Italy has been granting a digital nomad visa, allowing foreigners to reside and work remotely in the country legally. The initiative aims to attract qualified professionals, boost the local economy, and position Italy as a strategic destination for remote work.
The visa is intended for self-employed professionals, freelancers, and employees of foreign companies, as long as the company is not Italian. Unlike the tourist visa, which does not permit paid activities, this visa provides temporary residence and legal authorization to work remotely.
How to Apply
The application must be submitted to Italian consulates or through official online platforms, with the following documents: a valid passport, proof of income or a remote work contract, health insurance, and proof of accommodation. A consular fee is also required. The visa is usually issued within one to three months, valid for one year, and renewable.
Main Requirements
-
Professional Qualification: A university degree of at least three years, professional experience, or a professional license. Applicants without a degree must demonstrate at least five years of experience in the relevant field.
-
Minimum Income: €28,000 per year (approximately R$162,000 in 2024), which may include salary, rent, or royalties, provided these are officially documented.
-
Health Insurance and Accommodation: Coverage valid throughout the stay and proof of residence in the country.
-
Digital Work Experience: At least six months of professional experience in remote work or digital fields.
With this visa, foreign professionals can combine remote work with Italy’s rich cultural and historical experience.
